Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 7 Will Be The Last Major Update

Larian Studios confirms that the 7th patch of the game and the official mod support will mark the moment when Larian “delivers” the game to the fans, although they reiterate that Early Access was of utmost importance.

Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC, Steam Deck, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S has great reviews and success, but Larian has another IP in the works after completing the CRPG. Specifically, Patch 7 puts an end to its development once and for all.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Last Major Update

The game will have official mod support in an upcoming update, which was described by Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios, as the moment when the game will be “delivered” to the fans.

Speaking at the BAFTAs after winning multiple awards over the past months, Vincke talked about the development of this game and the studio’s commitment to continue supporting it in the long term.

“One of our big goals, which we are working on now, is for players to be able to add mods to Baldur’s Gate 3 themselves. Because then they will be able to create their own things,” said Vincke. “And I think that will be the moment when we say, ‘Okay, now it’s completely yours.’”

However, they clarify that the release of this update will not be the end of support entirely, but “you will see that the level of support decreases to fixing critical bugs” and now “we continue working as if the game had just been released.”

Larian “Delivers” the Game To The Fans

When asked if he was looking forward to the “final delivery moment,” Vincke responded with a resounding “yes.” “We are working on new things, super excited about the new games,” he said. “We are also creative spirits, we don’t want to keep doing the same thing, what we want is to move forward and do new things.”

We already know with all probability that Larian Studios’ new game will come in Early Access, as Michael Douse – the director of publishing – has previously said.

But Vincke elaborated a bit more during the BAFTAs on the importance of Early Access during the development of Baldur’s Gate 3. “The most important thing it brought was that it allowed us to correct the course,” Vincke said. “There were mistakes we were making, and the players were telling us, ‘this is a mistake, you shouldn’t be doing this.’”

Vincke then commented that they tried to listen to them and do everything in their power where it made a lot of sense: “That’s why I think it was crucial to the success of BG3.”

But how do developers know when this feedback is useful? “A lot of it relies on intuition,” he said, admitting that some elements can be analyzed with data. “In the end, it’s how I feel as a player about the game. I think if you do it differently, you get paralyzed and can’t do anything.”

He commented that you must follow your instincts and decide what you want to play. “And then, actually, it’s very easy because you just have to hope that it will be the game that others also want to play.”

He added: “You also have to keep in mind that there are many, many people in the universe with varied opinions. It’s impossible to please everyone.”

Therefore, Patch 7 of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be the last major update of the game, and Vincke recommends Early Access. But he admits that four years of this was “too much,” as players can get tired.
